Heavy Ass Weights!!!
My wifes brother ( ho works at a college as a football lecturer - what sort of idle job is that lol!) sorted me out with some weights today for my home gym. They are fixed weight dumbells - Going from 20kg to 40kg dumbells !!!
He drove them to my house from cheltenham and his car suspension nearly gave out!
I would just like to say they are BLOODY heavy! I tried to bench press the 40kg dumbells and managed 1 rep
Taz - would you like to come over and demonstrate how to bench press the 40s

Re: Heavy Ass Weights!!!
Hi Rick,
You MUST concentrate on strict form at all times! The weight you lift will slowly increase as you become stronger and bigger. Everyday I see guys throwing weights around the gym and lifting too heavy with poor form and guess how much muscle they have - NONE
Here's a key concept in growth: TIME UNDER TENSION - 30 to 70 SECS is ideal for gains in size, lifting too heavy and you'll get no where near 30 secs! Also, to gain muscle 8-12 reps is optimal, again lifting too heavy will put you out of this range and you'll be training for strength/power which should only attempted after 1 year of consistant resistant training
Any questions, just ask!
All the best
Taz

Re: Heavy Ass Weights!!!
1rm technique - Do you mean %1RPM? This is where you lift at a percentage of your maxmium. Its important that you lift to a percentage to reach your target. The percentage you lift at will determine the results - Strength, Power, Muscle Size, Muscle Tone and Muscle Endurance. All of these reults have specific percentages, sets and reps in order to achieve the desired result. Any questions just ask.
just wondered when i will need to incerase weights------> When it feels right for you AS LONG AS are able to complete the recommended SETS and REPS and are able to use STRICT TECHNIQUE. Just remember that as you are a beginner you will gain strength quickly, so I would expect to see your weights going up every 4-6 weeks.

Re: Heavy Ass Weights!!!
Excellent advice as usual in this thread from Taz.
Rick - you will do well to listen to Taz and do exactly as he says. In my experience this will make achieving your goals come a lot quicker and easier. Check out the natural physique he has constructed in his avatar - a product of getting your training, nutrition and rest right day after day after day. Bodybuilding is a way of life and you will also need qualities such as self-discipline and dedication and be able to apply your knowledge to your training and nutrition. The rewards in terms of a healthy lifestyle are more than worth this effort though and you will become stronger as a person and build your self confidence.
