Post by Busty Assassin Fri Apr 11, 2008 6:15 am

Hello,

I'm looking to shift a few pounds and have just read the website. It says to balance cardio with resistance. But what is resistance training? Am I being dense for not knowing.

Thanks

Hello Beauty Assassin and welcome to the site!

No your not being dense - this is what the website is for, to give you the knowledge you need to achieve your goals.

Resistance training basically means training with weights - this can be free weights (dumbells and barbells) or machines (like you would find in a commercial gym). Your body adapts to cardiovascular training very quickly and so it is easy to hit a plateau. Combining a cardio / resistance training program will help build & tone muscle which will mean you will burn more calories whilst at rest and your body composition will change which means your body will have less potential to store fat!

Keep using the website and if you need any help or have any questions then post up in here!

Thanks Garthy thats really useful. I've heard (if you're a poor student like me) who can use bottles of water and baked bean tins instead of weight. Does that actually work or is it a load of crap?

Lol thats old school training!

If you are on a budget and cannot get to the gym then any training is better than none. You can use the Training Guide on the website and substitute any exercises that use dumbells for things like bottles of water and baked bean tins etc. Water bottles would be better as you can start with them partly full and add more water to increase the weights when necessary. Very Happy

I don't like resistance training as much as cardio - is that normal?

I guess its a personal thing - resistance training is more commonly used by trainers wishing to add muscle or tone, dare I say it used more frequently by male trainers. However if you are looking to lose weight and or tone up then you must not underestimate the value that resistance training will add to your programme.

Resistance training is less likely to create bulk because of this difference, and it also can be easier on your joints.where as Weight lifting relies on gravity to create the stress on your muscles, which creates an entirely different response.

Thanks.....

Hello there. I have dropped off some 20 kilograms from 90 down to 70 kgs in just 4months, however now I have a lot of skin which seems rather flabby.

Now I don't have the time to go to the gym to tone myself up however I am looking for some exercises that I can do at home. Any tips please?

Resistance training Causes muscles to contract against an external resistance, with expectation to increase in their strength.

This training is also known as strength training. Basically it performed to increase the strength and mass of muscles, bone strength and metabolism. It is important for you to gain sufficient muscle strength, because it can help you perform daily activities with ease. As per my point of view Resistance training is overall good and benefits of it is superb.
